Grants of up to $2,000 to USA nonprofit and other organizations for educational programs that help people learn to read. Funding is intended to support services and programming in the areas of education for adults, English language, high school equivalency preparation, basic literacy, family literacy and math, and related resources.
The National Book Fund® (NBF) provides adult education and literacy programs throughout the United States with New Readers Press books and educational resources needed to support literacy initiatives. NBF grants are made in the form of New Readers Press materials requested in the grant proposal.
Priority will be given to nonprofit organizations and programs that provide literacy instruction at no charge to participating students.
Before ProLiteracy established the National Book Fund (NBF), literacy programs that couldn't afford to buy books for students and instructors simply did without them. Students shared worn-out books with other students. Instructors used cast-off books, outdated resources, and photocopies during lessons. But today, with the help of NBF, all that is being changed.
To be eligible for an NBF grant, the applicant must intend to use NBF materials directly with students receiving literacy instruction and/or with literacy staff, instructors, or volunteers.
New Readers Press, ProLiteracy's publishing division, provides the books and materials for NBF awards. These books are high-quality instructional materials specially written for literacy students and tutors. The NBF does not provide titles outside of those offered by New Readers Press.

Grants typically average from $500 to $2,000, although greater or lesser funding amounts are considered. Grant requests significantly over the $2,000 level are not typically funded, but will be considered as long as a clear programmatic and financial need is demonstrated in the application.
Prior to delivery of materials or online courses, all NBF award recipients must sign a Letter of Agreement that details the conditions under which the grant is being awarded. Recipient programs will have until May 10, 2020, to return the Letter of Agreement and the required cash contribution, if applicable.
