Grants of up to $10,000 to Sarasota County, Florida civic organizations, homeowner's associations, and resident-based groups for small projects that improve local neighborhoods. Neighborhood representatives must attend a seminar before applying, and applicants must notify the funding source of their intent to apply.

The Neighborhood Initiative Grant Program meets its objectives through five project themes:

  • Character: “Place-making” through the creation or enhancement of assets that are a source of neighborhood pride and identity
  • Leadership: Training neighborhood leaders or teams, and developing skills, for neighborhood governance or action
  • Safety: Equipping the neighborhood with knowledge or tools to prevent, prepare for, confront or respond to incidences of crime, danger or disaster
  • Environment: Protecting water & energy resources, and native plants and animals
  • Health: Increasing access to nutritious diets, physical or mental fitness opportunities, or health education

Approved projects must be completed, and Final Report submitted, within one year of the County Commission approval date.

Homeowners associations, civic organizations and other resident-based groups located in Sarasota County may apply.

Pre-proposal Conference:

Completion of an Application Seminar is a mandatory step of the grant application process. Find a full schedule here:

Neighbors with a Certificate of Completion date of more than three years ago are required to re-certify.

Application Seminars are free and materials will be provided. Seminars will include an in-depth explanation of the program details, processes, and application. Twenty-four hour advance registration for any seminar is required.

Pre-Application Information:

Applicants must submit an Intent to Apply by 5:00 PM, January 13, 2020.

Completed applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM, March 23, 2020.

Grants will be scored by the NIGAC on April 23, 2020 and are tentatively scheduled for presentation to the County Commission in June 2020.

Cycle Deadlines (Spring 2020, Cycle 33):
- Attend an application seminar no later than December 20, 2019.
- Notify Neighborhood Services of Intent to Apply by 5 p.m. on January 13, 2020.
- Submit completed application by 5 p.m. on March 23, 2020
- Applications will be reviewed by county staff in March/April
- Applications will then be evaluated and scored by the Neighborhood Initiative Grant Advisory Committee on April 23, 2020
- Applications will be presented to the Sarasota County Commission: TBD

The application process takes approximately seven months to complete:
1. A neighborhood representative attends a mandatory application seminar.
2. The neighborhood submits an intent to apply, triggering an onsite consultation with county staff (if applicable).
3. The neighborhood researches best practices, regulatory obligations, and costs; and determines how to make its match. The application is completed and submitted.
4. The application is reviewed by county staff and members of the Neighborhood Initiative Grant Advisory Committee (NIGAC).
5. The neighborhood sends a representative to attend the NIGAC scoring meeting. The NIGAC scores and recommends applications for approval. Applications are scored on Public Benefit, Community Support, Community Need, and Community Strengthening.
6. The Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) approves the applications
