Award of $1,000 to a USA college or university faculty member for excellence and innovation in teaching first-year teacher seminars. This award is intended to honor a teacher who has inspired student success, learning, and development, and who has demonstrated great success in teaching first-year seminars.

Nominators must explain how the nominees demonstrate excellence in all of the required categories below.

  • Develops Success in the Classroom and Beyond - Provides students with tools necessary for success in the educational environment.
  • Develops Students' Personal Strategies - Challenges students to maximize their potential by helping students to identify their own personal strengths and learning styles.
  • Incorporates Innovation in Teaching - Acknowledges and caters to a variety of student learning styles and changing student needs by incorporating activities or pedagogy, content, and activities that enrich and expand upon base-level course objectives.

Nominators must explain how the nominee demonstrates excellence in one of the below categories.

  • Fosters Student Involvement in the Community - Encourages and supports students in maximizing resources and opportunities available in their local and global community.
  • Supports Effective Utilization of Campus Resources - Encourages and supports students in maximizing resources and opportunities available through their institution
  • Develops Critical and Analytical Thinking - Challenges students to enhance critical thinking and analytical thinking skills.

What the Recipients Will Receive:

- Excellence in Teaching First-Year Seminars plaque
- Cash award of $1,000
- Travel expenses to attend the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience (up to $750)

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Any college/university faculty or staff that is a teacher of record for First-Year Seminars (or other First-Year Student Success course) for a minimum of two terms, within three years of the nomination may be nominated.

Nomination Deadline: September 30, 2019

The nomination should be from the College Dean or Academic Officers. It is requested that there be only one nomination per college or university.
